Description
Skill Level: Step up – Step out.
Participants should have some prior experience warping and weaving a loom (floor loom, table loom, or rigid heddle). This workshop is appropriate for:
- newer rigid heddle weavers looking to improve existing skills.
- practiced rigid heddle weavers looking for new techniques.
- multi-shaft loom weavers who want to experience what a rigid heddle loom can do.
Equipment Requirements:
- 1 rigid heddle loom in good working order with at least 8-10” weaving width.
- 1 or 2 rigid heddles at 7.5 epi or 8 epi spacing (10 epi ok). Double heddle projects require both reeds to be the same spacing (i.e. two 7.5 epi heddles or two 8 epi heddles)
- All warping and weaving tools and accessories you use such as warping pegs, threading hooks, clamps, stick shuttles, warp paper (or other warp separator – must be thin), paper towel tube, choke ties, measuring tape, etc.
Yarn Requirements:
Yarn and yardage requirements vary depending on which project is selected. Additional information will be provided closer to the workshop date. Yarn is not included in the workshop fee.
Project Choices:
Participants will have the option to choose a warping plan based on what they would like to explore.
Warp with a Single Heddle
- Quickie Scarf – focus on improving basic skills.
- Color & Weave – explore how color impacts our perception of plain weave.
- Pick Up Sticks – explore patterns created with warp and weft floats.
- Play Time – Do your own thing. Combine Color & Weave with pick up sticks if you want. Have a sudden inspiration to try something else or take something you already know a little farther? That’s ok.
Warp with Double Heddles
- Double your Sett – Using 2 heddles to weave finer yarns
- Double Heddle Patterning – Pick up without the pick up stick
- Double Weave – Explore layers, tubes, and double width cloth possible on a rigid heddle
- Play Time – You can try all of the above on one warp… plus a few more!
2-Day Workshop Target Agenda:
Day 1:
- Introductions
- Review project options.
- Overview of warp and weft calculations.
- Participants can set-up their loom for a pre-planned project or can take some time to plan their own adventure.
- Demonstrations for setting up your workspace, warping, and weaving will occur throughout the day as needed.
- Participants will move at their own pace.
Day 2:
- Participants will continue warping and weaving at their own pace.
- Everyone will have weaving in progress by the end of the day.
- Speedy weavers may warp for a second project.
- Demonstrations on warping, and weaving will occur throughout the day as needed.
- Additional information on threading diagrams, drafts, and drawdowns as they relate to the projects in progress will be included as time permits.

About the Artist: Stephanie found knitting by accident in 2002 when she came across a knitting book in the staff favorites section of a book store. The book went home with her just so she could solve the puzzle of how two sticks and a piece of string could make cloth. Then she didn’t stop. Knitting became spinning, became weaving. She crafts to explore. Finished items are never the goal. Stephanie now teaches knitting, spinning, weaving, and crochet at Cloverhill Yarn Shop in Catonsville, MD where she her joy of figuring out how stuff works is passed on to others.
