Hospitality 7pm, program 7:30pm
HCAC and Zoom
Program by Kelly Ennis
Program Overview
Kelly will introduce us to her woven words art. She hand cuts her weavings using handmade paper from a women’s co-operative in Nepal. She typically uses people as the subject matter which are expressed in the warp. The weft consists of images, words, phrases, songs, or speeches relevant to the subject. Kelly will be demonstrating her processes and showing the wide range of subjects she has captured. In-person participants will be able to weave along with materials provided. Zoom participants will learn by watching.
About the Artist
Kelly is an interior architect by day, paper weaver by night. With a BFA in Interior Architecture from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Kelly’s career started in design and architecture, working for global design firms on both coasts. Getting fed up with the establishment, Kelly started her own firm focusing on her strength in designing and building workplaces relevant to brand, culture and data.
The COVID19 pandemic nearly put her out of business. With a long time penchant for collage and unique paper, Kelly’s weavings started out as both a stress relief in the form of protest art during the lockdown caused by the pandemic and the resulting political uprisings. She finds inspiration in strong women, music, architecture, maps and structures. She is also exploring weaving through the context of urban planning, encaustic applications and quilting. New to the world of showcasing fine art, her pieces have been featured in local galleries and First Fridays in Baltimore and festivals throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Kelly lives in Baltimore City with her husband, two sons and dog, Rothko.
