There is still time to get over to the Honey Harvest Festival in Cockeysville today, from 11 AM to 4 PM at the @oregonridgenaturecenter! The WGGB is there, with fiber samples you can touch, samples of different woven patterns, and looms you can try out!

We have a fabulous workshop coming up -- A Spinnin

We have a fabulous workshop coming up -- A Spinning and Dyeing Celebration of Cellulose: Flax, Hemp, Tencel, Ramie, and Bamboo on Oct 26-27, 2024. Our spinning instructor will be Patsy Zawistoski who has taught nationally and internationally.

There are just a few slots still open and the registration deadline is Oct 12.

All materials are included in the workshop fee -- lots of fiber and all the dyes you'll need!

The little speckles and sprinkles throughout are tiny kitty heads. ❤️❤️❤️ I found it at @createdomesticity this week while shopping for some other fabric.

I am weaving this one with intent. The plan is to use the finished web as feature panels in a #sandhillsling sewing project.

On June 22nd, we are hosting a natural dye workshop as a part of the Sustainable Cloth Project with the @chesapeakefibershed . Join us with your garments, linens and textile projects for a day of plant dye. Each participant is welcome to bring up to 5 pounds of fiber to dye.

We will have indigo vats, several solid colors, and a steam kettle for eco printing. Our team will be leading demonstrations on indigo dyeing and eco printing, and will have a mordant bath and several solid dye baths to revive your textiles with new color.

This another triaxial weaving using 1/2” double fold bias tape. I love these colors.

What do I do with these? I need to find a way to use them so I can allow myself to keep making them.

I’ll be leading an upcoming meeting of my local @asguildhq Maryland chapter neighborhood group next month. So I’ve been experimenting with yardage requirements for samples. This square was made using 3 colors of Wrights 1/2” double fold bias tape, two 3yd packs of each color. I think I’ll be able to trim to 8”-9” square.

Posted @withregram • @anne.elixhauser I’ve been wanting to understand how to make feathers or leaves on a straight draw threading by designing in the tie-up. It looked like magic to me.

Inouye, chapter 4 focuses on designing images. So after trial and error, oh my goodness — my first leaves in various shades of green.

32 shafts, 45 dobby bars. Unmercerized 8/2 cotton in the warp and mercerized cottons in the weft, 6/2 and 5/2.

By the way, each sample on this warp is 26 inches long, 15 inches in the reed, just about dish towel size. I’ll be weaving a couple of these leafy towels.

According to the serial number it was made in 1936/37 and was used in an Occupational Therapy clinic in Baltimore. As a retired OT I had to have it. Posted @withregram • @anne.elixhauser It was supposed to be a gardening day but it alternately rained and hailed and occasionally the sun would peak out. So it was an afternoon at the loom instead. This draft is supposed to be rainfall, the kind that gets blown sideways.

Inouye’s book on multishaft design continued; the chapter is on curves but I like the driving sideways rain.

32 shafts, 74 dobby bars — it looks like that’s my max before it hits the floor. 8/2 unmercerized cotton in warp and weft. Weft is mostly navy blue but looks black. Maybe it was the clouds.

We catch up with one another, laugh, learn new techniques, and come home with lots of towels and more inspiration! It’s become as much a retreat as a weaving and has been so fun to watch how over the years we’ve become more confident weavers (& to realize personally how far I’ve come). This year’s theme was “Tom’s Favorite Towels”. Can’t wait for next year!!!

Is that on purpose? Some pointy, some roundy, some longer, some shorter. Randomly breaking it up with different color wefts make it even more irregular.

Posted @withregram • @anne.elixhauser Stripes and waves. Design based on Inouye, Chapter 3, Undulating Twill. Looks like random waves, crossed by random stripes.

8/2 unmercerized cotton, 24 epi, 32 shaft. Warp is camel flanked by unbleached white. Weft grew out of Sarah Saulson’s workshop, The Joy of Color, a study in analogous colors.

I’ve only been working on the dobby loom since I can do it with one foot — left leg is coming around slowly.
