Program by Jennifer Williams
Program Overview
This presentation explores the rich traditions of band weaving across different cultures, focusing on the variety of looms used to create narrow woven bands. From the backstrap looms of the Andes to the rigid heddle looms of Scandinavia, each technique reflects unique methods of warp-faced weaving. The presentation highlights construction, weaving techniques, and the evolution of these specialized looms without delving into the cultural significance of the practice. Through images and diagrams, attendees will gain an understanding of the structural differences in looms and the intricate craftsmanship involved in band weaving traditions worldwide.
About the Artist
Jennifer B. Williams is a band weaver who finds endless joy in her inkle loom, her favorite tool for creative exploration. Driven by curiosity and a deep respect for global weaving traditions, drawing from their vast histories, she explores techniques from around the world, finding inspiration for interpreting them on the inkle loom. Through her original project designs, she pushes the boundaries of what to do with an inkle band.
Passionate about sharing her craft, Jennifer teaches at guild meetings, conferences, and just about anywhere. She has even been known to weave on airplanes and in waiting rooms, just to spark the question, “What are you doing?” Her mission is to spark curiosity, encourage experimentation, and inspire others to think about inkle weaving in fresh ways.
Jennifer is a frequent contributor to Handwoven Magazine’s Easy Weaving with Little Looms.
