Program Overview
This lecture with powerpoint images focuses on Kathrin’s 46 years as a full time fiber artist/craftsperson while incorporating dyeing, weaving, exploration of various surface design techniques on fiber, and teaching into her life and career. This presentation opens avenues into her world of inspiration and fiber work through her nontraditional fiber techniques and humor.
About the Artist
Kathrin Weber (aka Blazing Shuttles) has been living in the North Carolina mountains as a full time, self employed fiber artist since 1980. Known for her colorful hand-dyed yarn and handwoven fabrics, she markets her work nationally through craft shows, galleries, and commissions.
Kathrin teaches weaving and dyeing workshops throughout the U.S. at guilds, conferences, retreats, and personal studios. She has a fearless approach to using color and guides her students into “informative play” while designing, weaving and dyeing.
Join her Facebook pages Blazing Shuttles and Blazing Shuttles Chatter, and shop for hand-dyed yarn on her website.
“I have been dyeing and weaving professionally since 1980. The first 30+ years I focused on creating and selling my own finished woven products. Since then I have focused on teaching techniques I developed over the years and on dyeing yarn for other fiber artists.
My goal for dyers is to learn to dye intuitively instead of relying on recipes for color. I think of this as similar to learning to play an instrument by ear rather than reading music. Both are excellent skills and I encourage both sets of skills! But if one can dye by eye, that person is never at a loss for color and not at the mercy of having a recipe at hand.”
